The process idea, i.e. the recognition of processes in a company and the management of these processes, is already part of various management system standards such as ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949. At the latest, a management system must be designed and implemented in a process-oriented manner. Many things can be done wrong when defining, introducing and managing processes. This makes it all the more important to understand the basics of process management.
It is not the QM representative who must define and manage the processes, but the so-called process owners. It is not enough to design and describe a process map, i.e. a graphical description of the processes, but these processes must be lived, and these processes do not usually correspond to departmental boundaries. For example, the procurement process usually passes through various departments such as purchasing, logistics and quality assurance. In addition, each process must be provided with measurable goals and measured in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. The individual regulations such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 in the revised editions of 2015 and IATF 16949 provide good and practicable approaches for designing a process-oriented management system.
